  • Jeff Rice is "Da Man"

My favorite IDYSD story in the October TW goes to you Jeff.

I loved what you did for your neighbor's son Josh. To trust your prize ride to the hands of a teenager with a driver's permit was really something special. I'm sure it will be a lasting memory that will live with that young man for the rest of his life.

Good on you! Hopefully it will spark another Studebaker addiction and create another young member for our club.

That story caught my eye as well. I'm sure Josh will remember that experience for the rest of his life. Someone on you tube has a video of their daughter armed with only a permit driving a lark convertible. I believe it has been discussed here before, but here's the link to the video.

Jeff has talked about his young mentee here on the forum, but its great for them both to share the story through TW.
It's a great example of a "today Studebaker leader" blazing the trail for "tomorrow's Studebaker leader!"

I'm just wondering if Jeff had an ultierior motive.

I remember a Florida state meet once when Matthew was too young to drive on the street. We had just arrived and Matthew and I were cleaning the road grime off the Avanti when Jeff pulled up in his bright yellow CE and said"Hey Matthew, wanta go for a ride" Matthew dropped his polishing cloth and jumped in with Jeff. A few minutes later they drove by with Matthew at the wheel! The next time I saw Matthew, he was across the parking lot cleaning up Jeff's truck!!

Yes, indeed that is a wonderful story. Jeff had stopped by the house about a week before I got that issue of Turning Wheels and told me the story. Needless to say I was impressed.

Now, Jeff, does he neighbor boy have his own key to the shop so he can drive the Yellow Stude on date night?

And Dave, we wouldn't dare infringe upon your sainthood, my friend. We'll just at Jeff to the list.

And at the next Florida show, Jeff says "Hey, I'll give ya 10 bucks if you polish all the underhood brightwork."

So he rips the 10 in half, gives me one of the halves and says "Here ya go. I'll give you the rest when you're done."

In hindsight, I should have taken my half and ran off. That woulda showed him.

Nice stories. Maybe they should be compiled and put into TW. You cannot imagine how those experiences stay with the younger members. I remember back in the early 70's Herb Keller stopped by my house with his 'new' 63 Hawk. I was in bed since I had an important test the next day at school. He got me out of bed --in my robe, brought me downstairs and gave me the keys. "Go for a ride!" says Herb. I did, in my robe, no license, in slippers. When I returned he commented to my father that he had never seen a Studie driver in such apparel and was glad the NYC police didn't stop me. They both were laughing and I had a big grin on my face. I will never forget that drive in the Hawk. Come to think of it, this must be the reason why I love those Hawks.

Why do you guys think I singled out Jeff's story?
As you are all aware, his attitude seems okay AND
                      he's a pretty good writer.
Not to mention he can be succinct.

Seriously, Dave. I'd be the first to cannonize Jeff. The inhibiting factor is that there's no cannons of sufficient caliber to perform the ritual.[:0][V]
