  • rotor button questions cant find the right one

    Im having trouble finding a rotor button for my 37 dictator. i can only seem to find the one without the full cut out for the dist. nothch. i tried to alter the other style and it ran but I would like to get the right one. anyone know where to find these critters.. thanks Jon

        This is Studebaker international's URL. They have everything you need. Your rotor may be No. 189113. Give them a call, you will probably need the ID number from your distributor.

          Wow Jon...I was hoping that you had already solved this problem and moved on to another one by now. The problem with these older cars is that you never know what some previous owner or mechanic has cobbled together. Also, as years go by the info in updated parts books sometimes get skewed or garbled. I was having a similar problem getting one to work on my '48 with its '53 engine running a '48 distributor. Here is a picture of some of the old stuff I found in my parts stash while attempting to get a correct rotor. Each distributor has some difference and the rotors, distributor caps, have some variation.

          Matching the right components can get a little confusing but keep at it and you'll get it. Have you made contact with your fellow stude nuts? There are some fine Studebaker folks in your state. If you get too discouraged...I have a much newer (1987) one owner Nissan Hard Body King Cab truck that I would swap you for the Studebaker. The truck only has a little over 332,000 miles on it and I guarantee the air conditioner works better than the one in that old Studebaker.

            Hi John, thanks for the info. My engine has the short cap in your photo. The rotor button on the far right looks like it would work. As for a trade. Nope. you would not wany my stude. It's been a bit altered.

                The best way to determine the rotor you need is to first figure out what distributor you have. Is it Autolite (likely) or Delco-Remy? What are the letters/numbers stamped on the tag on the side of the distributor? If you can list those we can try to help figure out what you have.

                Recently there was someone on the Antique Studebaker Club website was looking for distributor parts (points, rotor, cap) for his 1924 Light Six. He listed the numbers on the distributor and come to find out it was out of a late 50's Chevy and had been modified to fit the Light Six. So you never know.

                      The Autolite IGW-4001 is shown in the 1934~1946 chassis parts books as fitting the 1936 & 1937 Dictator and 1937 Coupe Express, so you do have the original distributor in your car. The Studebaker part number for the rotor is 189113. Studebaker International and other vendors (as noted above) should be able to supply the rotor you need.
