The tech tip page for V-8 engines seem to indicate it is a Lark type 259 built Jan. 15, 1964. I can't explain the digit 9 at the beginning.

Starting with The full flow engines I think, they used a date code instead of serial numbers

Matt, The Stude that your engine was originally fitted to was sold to a F M Wernyts on the 23rd April 1965. It was probably a 259ci Cruiser.

The reason the engine number didn't make sense is because I made a mistake in the V8 engine number table. The 9 in front of the engine number indicates that the engine was built for export. This is what the parts book says:

"Export engines built each day will be identified by a prefix serial number to the date code."

Somehow I transposed that prefix into a suffix. Bob Shaw will revise the engine number table.

Doug is correct on the date the engine was built. Date coding of engines began (and ended) with the 1964 models.

Simply by putting a picture of the engine number up on this forum I've gone from almost no information about the engine to knowing the day it was built, the day it was sold, and who bought it[:0]

If I put up a pic of next weeks Lotto form can you tell me the numbers

          Thanks all, very much.

Quigley - how did you know who bought it?

          Cheers

Does the prefix number have any significance? Does 9 mean Australia?

I have some records of the Assembly Division for Canada Cycle & Motor Co who assembled the 6600 odd CKD units here in Melbourne back in the sixties & for whom I worked. I can generally trace an original owner name & delivery date given an original engine number.

Doug, the 9 at the start of the engine numbers appears on a small percentage of my records but does'nt show before mid 1964 so I dont believe it applies exclusively to Australia. By the way, are you the Doug Hughes that came to our Melbourne National in 1985?

Guilty as charged. One of my most remembered Stude events was being registration #1 for that meet.

Haven't spoken to you for a very long time.
