  • Body work without changing the design

    My hotrod friend is doing marvelous work restoring the mechanicals on my 55K but I want it to go to a body shop for final blocking, fit and finish. I don't want to hurt my guy's feelings, but he's puttied over some mistakes and after spending all this money, I can't let it stay like that. I'm old school and if I replace metal, I usually heat and pound the area below final grade and then try to spot putty to the original line. My friend doesn't understand that, and by building up and smoothing over a raised joint, you're changing the lines and losing the lines. He's not a Stude guy. How can I make him understand that what Bob Bourke created is not for us to tinker with?

    The same thing happened to me. When I restored my 63 Lark, I took the fender to a body shop. It had a small crease on the wheel well, up above the crease near the rocker panel. When I got it back, the guy had covered over the crease by the rocker panel.

    He was so proud, that I didn't tell him that the crease was original form the factory. I took it home and I took the bondo off the crease.

      Thank you. That's what I mean. To some it doesn't matter. But I'm doing everything else right so I have to break it to him gently. He did his own cars, too and I don't want to insult him.

        I would not only remind him that the original lines will be compromised which would cause issues with original judging??? ( durned if I know but it's a good story ) but also remind him that there is a very good chance that moisture will adsorb into the filler and cause rust problems in the future.

        Just search the forum for body filler rust.

        Hope you can talk him out of it before you need to bugger up his mixing hand to stop him. [}]

          Thanks, Bob. I'm meeting with him, tomorrow. If he were a kid it might be easier, but he's old and stubborn like me, so I'll tell him not to do any more body work and pay him cash while I'm saying it. Hope that cushions the blow.

            Well, we had the discussion and it's going to a body shop, albeit, probably a piece at a time. That's Ok since once the shell is done, buddy will have something to start re-assembling while doors, fenders, etc get the treatment. It was like: " I never said I was a body man! Why did you have me do it anyway? Don't you appreciate the work I've done?" Once the scream for appreciation was out and the ego stroked, we got down to planning what to do next. But I was ready to break his mixing hand (thanks, guys).
