    Looking into the history of my 64 Avanti. I purchased it from a dealer in West Virginia in 2004, He stated he got it from an estate sale but didn't recall the name. It was originally avanti red and is currently bright red. It has a Black interior with an automatic.

    some details I know are...
    1. there was a notebook in the car with dates and service done to the car, most notably all brake lines replaced and silicone fluid used.
    2. There's a SDC sticker on the pass side back window from the keystone region chapter.
    3. The engine was replaced at somepoint with a stude 289

    any info you may know would be greatly appreciated.

    I have also heard a rumor of someone in Detroit that has all the factory notes from studebaker for items that need attention after assembly by serial number?

    You say the engine was replaced with a Stude 289, all original 1963 and 1964 Avanti came with Stude 289 engines but they were R1 version (non-supercharged) and R2 version (supercharged) primarily. If you mean replaced with a Stude 289 (not an R series engine) then perhaps someone can clear this up for you if you post engine number.

      Personally I want to see a Ford 427 in an Avanti - I like the FE series engine, my first musclecar was a 428 CJ Mach 1.

      Look along the top front edge of your engine just ahead of the valley pan cover. Two sets of numbers: one set is cast raised numbers - not what you want, the other set of numbers are stamped and smaller than the cast numbers - this is what you want. Tell us what you see, and we'll tell you what the block is - keeping in mind that will only determine what your block started out as, not what it might be today.

      No names on any of the service records?

          I believe that would be Nostalgic Motors...at least that's where my car's PO got his copy.
          1-800-Avanti-1 or 1-800-Avanti-X....according to their website that has been "under construction" for the past year or two.

              Although your engine block is clearly not original to the car, it could otherwise be an R spec engine. As a practical point, when a Stude block is irrepairably damaged, it will likely be replaced with the nearest available block.

              Take off one of your spark plug wire shields so that you can see the casting number on the cylinder head. My guess is that you will find that all the original engines bolt on pieces were transferred over to this replacement block.

                the number I found on the head is 1557620, however its a little corroded and hard to read. tried sanding it a little to get that. As always thank for any help

                  is there any differenc in the short block on the r1 or standard 289?

                    The bare casting is not different except the Serial number, however if ALL of the R1 components have not been transferred, it will not be anything like the real deal.

                    Does it have the large Crankcase Breather pipe coming from the right side of the Oil Pan to the two PCV hoses to the Carb. and the Air Cleaner? [?]

                          OK then it probably has the PCV Valve and small 3/8" hose from the rear of the lifter cover to the rear of the Carb. like a Lark/Hawk 289 then.

                          So without the special baffled Oil Pan and breather tube it is starting to look like some bozo offed the whole R1 Engine and did not save any of it's special parts like the high lift Performance grind Camshaft and aluminum timing gear, dual point Distributor etc.

                            thats not the news i was hoping for. guess thata makes it easier to put that 427 in though since its not the right motor anyways. Thanks for your help guys.
