  • timing cover ?

    I have a 55 Commander motor and need to take the timing cover off. Do I need to pull the crankshaft pulley off to take the cover off? I think I do. What kind of tools do I need to do that?

    I've got just over 24 hours until Back to the Fifties. Any help would be appreciated.

          Thanks. That did help. I'm heading over to my friends shop in the morning to get the tools I need. The bolt that holds the fuel pump concentric to the cam backed itself out. At this point there doesn't seem to be any damage. I'll take a look at it tomorrow when I get the cover off.

            Easy on that thrust bearing at the end of it all.

              You probably already know this but since your chasing tools.
              That crank bolt is 1 1/2in so be sure to get a big socket.
              Oh be sure the harmonic balancer pulley puller allows you to use bolts for your stude, don't use the fingered claw type. You'll bend that pulley. That would stink if you bent it and you need it on such a short time frame.

              Unless the friend lives next door, it stinks to have to drive back for the correct tool. I recall having to do this a few times in my poorer......less equiped youthful day's.

                Puller worked great. No real problems. The keyed washer was kind of rough so I made a new one. I'll go get a new bolt and it's going back together. Today.

                    I got everything buttoned up by 9 last night. Concentric is on, pump is on, and fuel is flowing.

                    Thank you for all the very quick help. I was referred to this site by a friend. I'm glad it's around.

                    I will take some photos. I'll even figure out how to post them.

                      Ok. I didn't make it. My transmission lost the drive gears. I topped off trans fluid before I left. When I started to have problems, I stopped and filled it back up. The car lurched forward a few feet and that was about it.

                      Now I can rebuild the Borg-Warner auto trans or I can use the Saginaw 4 speed I have at home. The only thing that keeps me from doing that is the $700 adapter plate.

                      Anyway, I had a good time trying to get to 50's.
