'62 GT Convertible spotted

My better half spotted this pretty '62 GT convertible custom in black/red. Anyone know the story behind this one? It was gorgeous! []



Apologies my hurried, clumsy photo is so blurry...I guess it's no worse than those of other rarities, Sasquatch and Nessie.

It was entering the I-280 North on-ramp from Monterey Blvd in San Francisco last weekend in the morning. I thought he might have been heading to the Pacific SW Zone Meet in Sacramento. Guess not, as others would have undoubtedly mentioned it.

I thought I had seen it before also,I thought in an old TW article. Noone else has mentioned it so I must be wrong but I am suprised noone here knows it. Steve.

LOL - exactly my first thought, too, John. We're showing our age.

Stevens always said he lifted the front-to-rear fender-top spear from the '61 Lincoln. I guess this means he got it right [8D].

Can't find the threads at the moment, but concensus here is:

1) New-for-'53 Flexiframe on long-wheelbase models
2) Lack of funds for low-volume-line tooling.

These sound about right to me since the next convertibles to come out of the factory were Larks, riding wheelbases even shorter than the '53-'58 standard sedans and wearing a lot of new sheet metal.

Got to admit, though... a well-done K-body custom convertible is pretty much my candidate for the World's Most Beautiful Car Ever [8D]
