  • Anybody own or ever see a Canadian Daytona HT...

    with a serial no. higher than C503926? That's what mine is, and it was built in June '64.

    For no real reason, I always thought I'd rather have a South Bend-built '64--not crazy about the Hamilton cars' white steering wheels--but that said, I know the Hamilton production nos. are lower than South Bend's and many have said over the years the assembly quality was better on the Hamilton cars.

    Again, mostly curious about higher serial nos. out there than C503926.

    An interesting question, Bill. Perhaps you have the "newest" 1964 Daytona hardtop extant, by Production Date/Serial Number. We'll find out. BP

          Bill, there should be quite a few with higher serial numbers than yours but whether they're still around is another question.
          Your car was built between June 9-12, 1964 and production on the 64 models continued until August 18. So two more months of production must have produced a few more hardtops.

            Bill , my '64 HT is a bit older then yours
            seial # is C501529
            Maybe Cdn 64 Hts would be a good registry for someone to do there was only slightly over 600 built , it would be neat to see just how many have survived

                Nope Dave; I can't beat those numbers, apparently your Grandpa's Daytona was a quite early Canadian built Import even though we bought it Dec.24, 1964, it was only: C500969 and Assy. Date 3-11-64 with engine # VCB-418 according to the Production Order, but I know the Engine numbers did not have dashes, anyway it's VCB418 = 259/Canadian/Feb./1964/18th.

                That is the only Import '64 H/T I have ever had, the current Astra White one, is a South Bend Car, like the other three. [:0]

                    Thanks to everybody for their info in this thread. I'd like to know the serial no. of the white Daytona HT Craig put the link to.

                    I did not know '64's were built until August; thanks Art for that info (guess had I not been so lazy and dug out the TW about either '64's or '65's, I'd have known that!).

                    My car's engine no. is VCC403--built at South Bend March 3, 1964. It's the original engine at 103K.

                    I mentioned this earlier in another thread, but my P.O. from the museum showed the car was built for 'stock' on June 10, 1964, but the selling dealer wrote up a 'deal' for it on June 27 and it had the serial no. on it. The window sticker has a large "CORRECTED" stamped on it. The 'correction' is most likely that it has a dealer name and address on it after that area was probably blank as the car was built for stock!

                    I sent the original owner (still lives on the same street in the same town, but not the same house number!) pictures I took with a cheapy disposable camera the day it was delivered here a couple weeks ago. Got a short, nice note from him yesterday, saying "Thank you very, very much for the pictures and letter and keeping us informed about 'THE CAR'! We look forward to seeing it downtown on July 4, 2009."

                    That is my goal--to have it safe and reliable enough to drive 1 1/2 hrs. each way to Greenville, PA, where it was sold new, to enter it in their Historical Society's Car Show that day...of course, that's 'Drive Your Studebaker Day' too! That town's so small that if I contacted the local newspaper about my having the car and the original owners together, it would no doubt garner a front-page photo! And although the selling dealer now lives in central OH, he has expressed interest in coming back up to Greenville that weekend. That would be neat. The Service Manager from the dealership still lives there, too...his signature is on the "New Car Preparation for Delivery" (or something like that) worksheet that was in the glove box!
