  • Electric window conversion

    Anyone have comments of experience on converting crank windows to electric on a '63 or '64 Avanti.

    Do you currently have crank windows?

    I have a '63 with powered windows that I might like to convert to crank if it is an easy swap.

    Still haven't decided for sure if I want to do it yet, but saw your post and figured I'd inquire.

      I have seen a conversion kit on ebay and just looking for comments. I am in process of getting an Avanti, don't have car yet.

        It's likely the reason there haven't been more responses to your post is because the majority of Avantis left the factory with powered windows.

        Do you know for sure that the Avanti your getting doesn't already have them?

        If the window kit you saw on Ebay was a universal kit for customs/hot rods, I'd proceed with caution.

          If you get an Avanti with manual windows, I suggest staying with them. The power windows tend to damage the fiberglass in the doors. The power window motors do not last and are rather expensive to replace, even though there are now repro replacement motors for $195 each plus shipping.

              I agree...and the cranks are positioned comfortably, even my short arms can reach the passenger side and put it up or down from the driver's seat.

                I would gladly swap out power windows for manual. BTW.most Avantis were manual windows, perhaps 25% were power. If I'm buying a Avanti I prefer manual windows since I've actually had to replace a few doors do to damage done by binding regulators.

                  I stand corrected.

                  So then, what would one need to swap out powered windows for manual?

                  Are they a direct bolt in or are the regulators different?

                  I'm not really all that interested in wiring mine back up and am at the point where I need to rebuild the regulators and reinstall the windows.

                      Hundreds of power windows are installed (swapped out) in street rods each and every day getting rid of non-working manual or electric systems, and replacing missing systems. These systems are installed in fibreglass street rod bodies all over the country. Contact a street rod club in your area for further tips and help. Today's electric windows are not the dreaded kind of the past.

                        Many are swapped out to manual do to the cost of the motors, rareness of good regulators and the damage done to doors by binding regulators. BTW most street rods kits will not work with curved side glass and will take away value from a stock car. I'd guess about $1000 to swap to Studebaker power windows using Studebaker parts.

                          Last time I was up to see the owner of Specialty Power Windows in Forsythe, Ga.... He told me he would make up an Avanti power window kit 'if' he could get an Avanti door to do the retrofit.
                          I like his product, which carries a lifetime guarantee...

                            I'm simply interested in converting my '63 Avanti's original powered windows to stock manual windows -can anyone tell me what stock Studebaker parts are needed to accomplish this?

                            Are the regulators different? Were the manual Avanti regulators specifically designed for the Avanti or were they used in models?

                            I realize I'll likely have to modify my door panels due to the addition of cranks. Anything else I need to take into consideration?

                            If it's going to be a difficult swap, I'll just re-install the powered regulators. I have two good motors and the regulators have already been modified with SI's strengthening kit.

                              Nearly everything is different outside of the windows themselves and the tracks. Regulators, idlers, switches, cranks, small parts. If you look at the parts manual you'll see different part numbers for just about every last piece between power and manual windows. Whether Avanti regulators were used in other models I don't know, but Avanti's have curved side glass and other Studes (I believe) have flat side glass, plus possible different attachment locations on the door. That may make quite a difference in parts design. There also different sized holes in the upholstered door panels for switches vs. cranks and they may not even be in the same location.

                              I just think trying the conversion from one to the other will leave you halfway through it wondering why you ever started. I think it's a case of the orange not being worth the squeeze.
