There is a 1955 President Hardtop on Ebay. Owner says 6Hk5 2551 on firewall and
VIn 71629444. Is it a Speedster ? How can one tell the difference compared to a
President Hardtop? Car is at $1025 and needs most everythng.
Thanks,
...Dick
no, a Speedster would be a 6H-K7. Differences between a Speedster and a regular President Hardtop would be primarily the dashboard and the interior trim, although there's some exterior trim items that may be different as well. The Speedster has a unique, engine turned dash with Stewart-Warner gauges, while a K5 would have the same dash as all other '55 C-Ks (and very similar to pre-Ultra Vista '55 sedans.) The seats and door panels on a Speedster would be leather, not vinyl or cloth.
Klif: One feature of Speedsters was their standard leather interior; all of them, not just the show cars. (Well, OK, I suppose someone is going to document a special order with a cloth or vinyl interior, but it would have had to be special order indeed.) BP
We've got to quit saying, "How stupid can you be?" Too many people are taking it as a challenge.
Ayn Rand: "You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality."
G. K. Chesterton: This triangle of truisms, of father, mother, and child, cannot be destroyed; it can only destroy those civilizations which disregard it.
Many Thanks for the info. Guess I won't bid although the car does seem to be restorable
and I always admired the 55 hardtop. Nuts, I won't have a lemon and lime Studebaker.

Didn't the Speedster trim also make it possible for it to pull of tri-tone paint scheme(IE Were the tri tone paint schemes limited to the Speedster?). I was always fanatical about that White/Coral/Charcoal scheme they used .
1964 Studebaker Commander R2 clone
1963 Studebaker Daytona Hardtop with no engine or transmission
1950 Studebaker 2R5 w/170 six cylinder and 3spd OD
1955 Studebaker Commander Hardtop w/289 and 3spd OD and Megasquirt port fuel injection(among other things)

It would be possible on other models, but only offered on the Speedster. This is one I miss.
According to Mr. Quinns artical in Collectible Automobile Oct 98.
The show cars were all leather, but production was vinyl for head liners and door panels and I think the qtrs also. The 3 I took apart for restoration of mine were that way.
There were 14 show cars not 13 as I stated. Memory seems to be fading. Age???

[B)] As we clarified, Klif; 'meant to say leather seats; not the whole interior. BP
