Amazing, I've never seen this Guy's videos before, they are way better than the Amateur ones from the PSMCD Races we find here.

That was last year, Dan; the 2020 Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race....one of the few "regular" collector-car events held last year!

Details of that race and others are in the January 2021 Turning Wheels. BP

Is that the same Avanti that beat the Firebird? In the comments to that one, there were a number of folks who insisted that the Avanti couldn't beat the Pontiac if it was stock. Do we have any idea what the speed secrets might be for that Avanti?

The secret is it is a Studebaker that someone took the time to properly prepare just as with the GTO that got beat.

Mike, Chuck Kern's white Avanti in the subject video was the only Avanti competing at the 2020 event.

He didn't run any Firebirds, either in the shootouts or in practice, so it may have been another year you're thinking of. Do you have any idea what year that might be? BP

Yep. Chuck's Avanti would easily pass "heavy tech," as they call it up there. BP

It was the vinyl roof that caused the Pontiac's defeat. I've always hated those and the additional air drag obviously slowed the Pontiac down. I used to be (and still am) a Pontiac fan, but I would remove a perfect vinyl top on any car.

BTW, that doesn't appear to be a Judge. GTO, yes, Judge, no.

                      Right, Bob; thanks.

That was The 2018 Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race, in which Chuck Kern and his Avanti won their 2-out-of-3 shootout by beating the Firebird 400 in Rounds 2 and 3. BP

Yes that video is the one I was remembering.

Chuck's Avanti seems to be really fast off the line. Does anyone know what rear end he is running? My wild guess is that, to get that kind of take off from an Avanti, it would be 4.11 or maybe 4.53? Whatever it is, it seems to be perfect to drag racing.

Not that spectacular, Mike: Chuck's Avanti has a 3.73:1 Twin Traction axle.

He just has a good "eye" and good co-ordination to get off the line so fast without spinning. BP

That is what got my attention as well, a heavier than a 2 Door Lark, Avanti, with 3.73 Gears (No 4.27 or 4.54) and AUTOMATIC and those skinny original looking Classic Tires, WAY smaller than on the Stude Tomato and the Wrapper going THAT Quick?

Chuck went 13.83 at 97.80 MPH and was able to beat a Ram Air 400 4 Speed '69 GTO, 445 ft. Lbs. Torque and 366 HP.

Sure does not seem possible when you weigh it against what the Larks can do, it's getting Very close, all except the Top Speed that doesn't count!
