  • Factory paint on the floors - ‘58 President

I worked out a trade deal recently with a friend in Colorado, he’s getting my ‘55 pickup and I’m getting a ‘58 President sedan. He picked up the car about a decade ago from the original owner’s estate and hasn’t done much with it since. Has been garaged in Colorado since day one. Completely original and untouched.

Before the car heads to Florida, he took it upon himself to have his local upholstery shop replace the seat stuffing and install an NOS headliner. Yesterday he sent me a few photos. I knew it was a nice car but I don’t think I have ever seen a Studebaker that looks this clean under the carpeting.

Matt, nice find! Its not easy finding a rust-free example.

That car is interesting. I don't think I've ever seen a '58 President that didn't come equipped with a clock and padded dash.

Craig, the only options listed on the build sheet are a Climatizer and whitewall tires. That’s it.

I have a Wonderbar radio and NOS clock for it just so the dash looks better. Also have an NOS dash pad but I’m not sure I want to go through the hassle of pulling the dash apart to install it.

Just seeing that floor tells a lot about what the rest of the car must be like. That really is amazing. Great score!

Radio delete on a President! That could have been one of my parents cars.

Congratulations! You don't find them like that very often. What does the odometer show for accrued mileage?

                    Matt,
I have a few cars like that here in the UK. When they are that good they are a doddle to work on and take all the pain and suffering out of the up keep.

That one was of the reasons I wanted the car, that and it's my favorite '58 color combo (Bluff Grey with Cliff Grey fins and roof). The first Stude I ever bought with my own money (at age 18) was a '58 Commander with original paint. I had a lot of fun with that car. Time for another one.

I think what you're seeing is the cardboard / tar paper that the factory put in place so that the carpet lays down smooth.

                              Aha I see.
(But to me it still looks like the garage floor under the car.)
