  • American Pickers buy an Avanti...

On the American Pickers marathon airing today, an episode aired featured Mike and Danielle visiting a young lady with several Studebakers. There was a black 1960 Hawk, a "flamingo" orange 1961 Hawk, and a turquoise 1963 round headlight Avanti with a 4 speed. The lady with the cars had short blonde hair; I think her name was Kelly. They bought her Avanti for $17K.

In a later episode, Mike and his mechanic are going to drive it around the wet streets of the town where they bought the old Chevy dealership - needless to say, there is a lot of laughing and fish-tailing... I have been impressed as to how many Studebaker honey-holes they have visited.

And they overpay almost every time.

Better to overpay a bit than be considered to be taking advantage of folks.

Well..... it is "Reality TV", which means it's probably not real at all.

Several years ago, my son saw them buy a small Studebaker item on the show.
He contacted their store to inquire about it because he wanted to give it to me for a Christmas present.
He called twice and they never returned either call. BP

I figure doing the shows for the History Channel is their primary revenue stream. Still these people know quite a bit. I was half expecting Mike to say "these cars are awesome, and you could even get a supercharger, but you gotta check the hog troughs..."

That episode was the Big Tennessee Welcome. The Flamingo Hawk pictured in the still on that show was our Hawk and the pictures were taken at Fifty Point in Winona Ontario. The pictures were taken for a calendar shoot. I think that the family was the Gwinnett family. If you had a roster, you can look them up in it. I tried to contact the pickers about the 61 in that episode for information, but would not return my call's.

That's right SuziQ, they were in our local club when we lived in Nashville. We got our Avanti near the same time he did and he and I both decided we wanted to paint them turquoise, but he beat me to it, ha ! We painted ours red. Talked with Kelly ..by email I think.. the 1st time that show was broadcast, because I didn't know then that her Dad had died. Her Mom was a judge at a couple of our events, your car had better be right, ha ! Good folks.
