Being ridiculously rich, Bruce could have afforded to put whatever he wanted under the hood. I remember reading this issue and wondered about why Batman was welding a painted fender and why they weren't wearing something more appropriate to work in. I just figured it was along the line of a posed photo for Alfred. My sister had a prodigious collection of comic books and shared freely.
