  • Drag race rained out today

After I left the AACA show, I drove to Richmond Dragway where Tom Covington was going to race his Avanti. Jeff Rice (Deep-N-Hock) was there with Tom. When I got there Tom & Jeff were in the staging lane, but the rain drops started before Tom could get on the track.

This is Jeff by Tom's car.

The storm started and a heave downpour ensued with lightning & thunder. We gathered under a tent but as the storm progresses they called off the race.

This is Jeff guiding Tom back on the trailer.

I still haven't installed a 12 vold windshield motor on my 52 Commander so I used RainX, but the rain was coming down too fast so the visibility was very poor.

I got home safely, but there was a SUV resting on it's top on the interstate as I was going home, and I am sure it had windshield wipers!

Glad you got home safe Lenny. That was some storm and we all got a soaking. When you showed up with that rain coat the storm must have followed you. We had a great time despite the set back from the rain. And we did get to see the first round of Pro Out Law testing. I'll see if I can't host up some of their runs. Keep your rain check and we will try and go next weekend. Just leave the rain coat at home. That 52 looks good among the competitors.

Thanks for tossing up some pic's Len..
It was a typical summer race day..
They had a big 'outlaw' pro-mod event going on, so there were a lot of top shelf drag cars there.
Tom unloaded, went through tech, and we went up to the starting line to watch the first round of qualifying for the pro mod guys.
It was hot hot hot out and sunny.
Off to the west of the track there was this big ol' blob of a cloud.
Every 15 minutes it doubled in size.
Then it grew to where it overlapped the track and brought some welcomed shade.
Three broken rear ends and transmissions really slowed down the racing, as the track was oiled down three times..
Then, after Tome got in the staging lanes we heard a boom of thunder...
                    Uh oh...
                    Then a crack of lightning..
                    Then some rain drops..
Went back to the trailer and hid out under a borrowed tent wand sat in borrowed chairs (it's a caso thing) and ate our lunch awaiting the end of the rain from this one big cloud.
The cloud s l o w l y moved east and it actually stopped raining and the crew got out all the drying equipment and got to work.
Then the cloud moved south and then back northwest and just gushed for more than an hour.
The parking lot turned into a three inch deep river..
They must have had 4 inches of rain.
So they called it off and we loaded up and drove home to Tom's place (about 45 miles)..
Not a drop of rain there...
Going back Sunday to flow bench test some Stude modified intakes and swap some stuff around on the Avanti..
(Betcha it will be a nice day, too[:0])
