great stories. I too grew up in the 60's and started driving legally at 14 in '68. I tell my kids we were just more mature when we were there age (drinking age here was 19). I got to drive to the grave many of the cars that that are so valued now. 440 road runners, camaros, mustangs, 390 fairlanes, r2 avantis. all great memories that couldn't be repeated today. those cars were cheap and plentiful. You could hardly give those old musclecars away during the gas shortages. I was logging in the 70's driving a 66 fairlane with a 390, 4-sp and 3.23 limited slip. it was a terrible car in the woods but it would sure haul on the long drive home. I am lucky to be alive after abusing those go-fast-no-stop-no-steer cars. I loved the late forties cars and had quite a few that were on their way to the crusher when I got done with them. I think maybe the memories are better than the cars. I am one of the reasons those cars didn't survive. Actually it sounds like I am one of several...

You know, I read through this again and the sum of the posts made me realize something. This is the reason I'm moving to Charlotte! I want to turn the clock back on (restore) my cars and the only way i can do that is to bring my cost of living down. Instead of spending 100k on a house, I can spend one third that for just as good of a place with much more land to hide, I mean, stash, ooops, um, store, yeah that's right, store more studes.

        Lotsa Larks!

<<I was driving home on an almost empty freeway at 10:00 at night. I looked at the moon through that huge windshield. I was wearing a gray suit with a matching tweed hat. I turned on the radio in time to hear a rebroadcast of a 1962 Manhatten Jazz concert. For a few brief moments, I imagined myself in 1962, when my Cruiser was new and men wore hats.>>

Sounds like a Sam Spade narrative, Scott! Maybe you WERE back in '62 for a few minutes. Ever see the movie "Somewhere in Time"? <G>

I always think I should have been born about ten years earlier than my 1958...for reasons of music, cars, etc., but I do know I would have had a problem with that pesky VietNam!

I always say I would love to go back to about spring of 1964, with today's money, and buy a new '64 convertible, GT, Avanti, and Champ, at the fire-sale prices I've heard South Bend was basically offering on already-built, stockpiled '64's they had parked around the old plant!!
