  • Stude Moment

I wanted to share a special moment that I had last night. The director of our car museum called me at the last minute and wanted to know if I could take a group on a tour of the museum. My brand X car was low on gas, but Stuart had half a tank. Since the weather was clear, I decided to drive him.

The tour went well, I was driving home on an almost empty freeway at 10:00 at night. I looked at the moon through that huge windshield. I was wearing a gray suit with a matching tweed hat. I turned on the radio in time to hear a rebroadcast of a 1962 Manhatten Jazz concert. For a few brief moments, I imagined myself in 1962, when my Cruiser was new and men wore hats. The only thing missing was a Lucky Strike or L&M. I then thought of a question, how many of us would like to go back to the year when our cars were new? Would I really want to be an adult in 1962? How many of us would like to go back to 1955 or 1964 or 1937? when our cars were new? Just a thought.

In 1948 I was six years old when my 48 Champion was new so I probably wouldn't have much use for a car of my own at that age. Maybe 1958 when I was sixteen I would want my car but probably not as at the age of seventeen I got my first car, A 53 Studebaker 2Dr.H.T.

Being a kid in the 60s was fun!
An adult? I don't know if I'd like that.
Sure you could buy gas for 29.9 a gallon, but if I had been a few years older I might have been in Vietnam. By todays standards, cars, communications/computers and healthcare were primitve, but we didn't know any better. Now I sound like my grandmother when I used to ask her about the 30s-40s.
But it would have been neat to buy the great cars of the era when they were new (keeping in mind $3-5,000 was a lot of money back then). My 63 Avanti had a sticker price of $5400, more money than my dad (then an Air Force major) could afford in 63.

To answer your question a slightly different way, having been born in 1954 I sometimes think it would have been good to have been born 10 or 12 years earlier. That way, I would have been in my car-crazy early 20s in the mid to late 1960s when lots of good (and bad) used Studes were still to be had at rock bottom prices. As it was, I couldn't buy my first Stude until the 1970s. Yes, there were still some good deals to be had then too, but the SUPPLY of the cars in Western PA (due to rust and indifference) was a lot smaller than it was 10 years earlier!

I was born in '64, about 5 months after my Daytona was built. Vietnam aside, I always thought it would be cool being in my 20's during that time. But I'll admit that for $2300, I'd probaby be buying a '65 Mustang with a Stude, er, Ford 289, or a Valiant with a 273 and 4 speed.

Having been an independent insurance adjuster in the past, the thought was that if I ever went back to that, I'd get a Lark 4-door in white to look at vintage cars with (like an older company car).
