  • 1938 Studebaker pickup

    Hello all, I am new to this forum. My name is Mark Wrobleski. I own a custom shop in phoenix az called Kreative Rodwerks. Some of you guys may not like what we do but we build a replica 39 Studebaker pickup that fits on a chevy s-10.
    I am not here to promote my business but am here looking for a little help. I have a customer who is interested in building a 1938 Studebaker pickup. I have searched all over the internet and have only found one for sale. It was a truck that had been equipped with a large wooden bed and would not suit my needs. Is there anyone who might be able to help me out. Thank you in advance. By the way this is a great forum!

    Two views above. The truck is original though I opted to remove the side mount from the passenger side and use the State Commander headlights. Other views available upon request.

      One of our Stude part vendors (Studebakerparts.com) and a very active
      member in the Grand Canyon Chpt of the Studebaker Drivers Club: Chuck
      Collins lives in the Phoenix Area. You might want to give him or his
      wife Chris, a call and see if they know of a 1938 in the area or at

        I don't have a problem with what you do. I have owned both stock and modified Studebakers. I beieve that people should be able to do as they desire.

        There is a guy in New York State that has an SDC/AACA winning 1938 Coupe Express. That is probably what you are looking for. I don't have any pictures to send you, but Leonard probably does. The major difference from '38 to '39 is in the nose.

        I just re-read your post. At first I thought that you wanted to build something like the '39 that you now build. That would just require a different nose section. If you want to buy a complete '38 Coupe Express, that is going to be difficult, but not impossible.

          Good luck finding one of those! Very few were made in the first place and even rusted out hulks are commanding a good price. Beautiful trucks and very valuable. Keep looking and don't give up hope!

            They are called a "Coupe Express" and were made in 37, 38, and 39. Each to his own, but I think the 37's are the prettiest.

            Jeff Rice has a VERY nice one...

            BTW, I have always thought your product is beautiful. Very nice proportions. Great concept!

              Hi, Mark

              Welcome to the Forum. I've looked with interest at your website, and also seen pictures of finished customs of your doing on eBay.

              If I bought one of your kits, I would change the headlights to cathederal style like on this 38 convertible, to stay more in line with the era. One of our SDC VPs, Richard Dormois, couldn't find a coupe express when he wanted one, so he built a clone using parts of sedans, pickups, etc. His has those headlights and I like them.

                Wow I didnt expect so many replies this soon. I have been searching all day and it seems my customer could not have picked a more difficult vehicle to find. I do appreciate all the positive comments in regards to my 39 Studebaker Kit I was worried what some might say.

                  Nice kit,but I don't really see the Studebaker in it. Most of us are pretty open minded about doing what you want with your car, but there are sometimes vigorous discussions of what is good taste.

                      Didn't studebaker make just a regular truck in 38? The guy didn't ask about a coupe express, or did I miss something?

                        Mark, I think it's great that you are having success with your kit, but, honestly, I think that calling it a "replica" of a '39 Coupe Express is like claiming Rosie O'Donnell is a "replica" of Marilyn Monroe. Actually, your kit bears a LOT more similarity to the '40 Ford, IMHO.

                        If you were to call it a "modern-era re-imagining of the classic '39 Studebaker Coupe Express", I believe it would be less offensive to the purists.

                        Yep, Studebaker built both the Coupe Express and a one-ton Fast Express in 1938. The Fast Express is considerable larger, but a fine-looking rig in its own right.

                              I must say I like both, as examples of design for their time period. I'd be happy to own both, however would drive the "new" one more because it is contemporary, the other is a "classic" vehicle. And no, I'm not referring to that mob who believe they can control the word "Classic."
