Yep. Any Stude Dana 44 or 27 will fit in most all others. Truck rear ends are a different width, however.

So, could you take a Dana 44 from a '63 Lark 4 door and put it in your '53? Absolutely.

52 rear axles are 1" shorter on the shaft it self.

I think the specific answer to your question is 55 1/2 inches. Correction, anyone?

Thanks oldguy829. I was wondering when somebody was going to answer that question. If that is flange to flange I need to find a 9" rearend for my 56 wagon.

FWIW, I have an 8" from a Maverick. It is 56", fits very well.

As you may know, all the stude rear ends are the same width. I don't believe you can find a 9" to fit. 58 or 59 " is she shortest (from an old hacks memory). they can be shortened, at great expense.
S10 rear ends late 80's to about 02 came as narrow as 54", and some (few) were posi. After chasing the same issue for a month, I went back to Stude. Just got a rearend today out of a 55 commander. It will bolt right in and it is a dana44. The posi units are available, and I don't believe too expensive, but not being a rear end specialist, I'm not sure what all needs to be changed. Be careful, as some studes had dana 27's and in the dana 44 I was told to get gears from 328? or higher and a posi would work. The tag on this one is 43/13 (330) so I think I'm on the right track. I'll let you know if I've made a mistake. don

One drawback to the web is the anonymity. don't know if you're talking to a class builder looking for one little bit of info, or a newb, so no offense intended. Several S10 posi rear ends on ebay. About $500 plus shipping (and they all seem to be in florida) At 54 inches, (flange to flange) theres room for adapters to a 5x4.5 bolt pattern, from the chevy 5x4.75.

Flange to flange on the Stude should be 55.5, but I don't have one to measure. Was hoping someone would confirm. The stude rims I have are zero offset, and the factory specs are 55.5 rear trac width, ergo.....

The 57-59 Ford 9" was 58" give or take a 1/2" depending on the size of the brakes. But the 57 T-Bird had a 56" wide 9". See if you could get one of those cheap. Stude rims should have about 4.3" back space for the 5 1/2" rim.
