1961 Studebaker Hawk #535

I have a 1961 Studebaker Hawk...not a Golden or a Silver, but just the Hawk that my grandfather special ordered. Knowing that it would be the last year they would be produced. It is a 4-speed manual on the floor with the V-8 engine. On the glove box it says that it was special built for "my grandfather" with the # 535. It has been stored inside since grandpa brought it home in '61. It has @63k miles and has some body rust (not much)and the chrome is pitted, but the interior was re-done around 10-15 years ago by my grandpa. It is fire engine red with with white just below the fins. I don't know much about cars, but I would say it is in very restorable condition. I'm am trying to sell this and have no idea how much to even ask...Any help from anyone knowing anything or information about this would be greatly appreciated.

Wow!!!! I have a 61 Hawk.I bought it as a basket case.I have about 5K invested, plus at least 6K worth of labor in it. It would be very hard to sell it as it looks right now.I would never get my investment back.

I think most members of this group would agree that the best way to sell this car[if you must] would be to put it on EBAY. put up lots of pics,especially under the car,floors,frame,etc. Or,contact a professional ebay seller[as in JDP,on this forum]-and pay him a fee for doing the 'dirty work'.

I know...I know...I swore I would never sell it and would some day fix it up and drive it around, but I have a business oportunity and need the money for investment. My grandpa would probably, hopefully understand........Maybe not. I know that by it sitting in storage, it's not doing me any good, and there's no way at this point that I could do anything with it, However, in 5-10 years I could. But have no other way to invest. This would be my only way to get the money to continue a business that is thriving and needs and young person to take over and make some real money. My Grandpa was a business owner, and I'm hoping that he would understand???... Trust me on this...I'm torn!!!!! At this point this is my only option. But then again if I can't get what I think I want for it, and or, what I think it's worth.....WELL THEN.....plan B will have to be pursued!!!!!

Well with cars, it's CONDITION, CONDITION, CONDITION! without some good pic's it's a hard call to price it, but one important thing is: was the interior done by a professional to closely resemble the original? And how much, and where the rust is, and how BAD and deep the pitting chrome is.
Did the car get exposed to "rust belt" salted roads? The average in my opinion is between $3000.00 and $5000.00 remember Studebakers although somewhat rare collectable and classic cars, are not as popular as say a '57 Cvehy.[V][xx(] ! Hope this helps,

1961 was the last year for the finned Hawks and the first year for the floor mounted four speed,so thats a big plus for your car.
If I was looking for another Hawk to restore this is exactly the one Id want.

All Hawks for 1961 were "just the Hawk." There were no Silver Hawks in 1960 or 1961 nor Golden Hawks in 1959-1961. The Hawk line ran from 1956 through 1964, not 1961. There were 3929 1961 Hawks. All but 266 were V8s.

For value, it is hard without pictures and a better description. Was the interior redone as original? Why would an interior be redone with 63K miles? Are you sure it is not 163K? Need a better description than "some body rust." With what I have to work with, I would guesstimate the car at $4000-$5000. I believe that your best shot is to put the car on eBay with pictures and a good description.

I own a '61 Hawk (Plate# 0911) that was delivered to Roselle, Illinois (about 80 miles northeast of you)
It is also 'Blaze Red'. I like your grandfather's style...
While the 4 speed definitely adds to the collector value, you need to be real careful as to being accurate about the rust condition of any Midwest Hawk. Rust in all the Hawk places can kill the resale value, as replacing everything is a very expensive proposition.
Not trying to shoot anything down on your Hawk, just giving you the heads up to be prepared to answer a lot of very detailed questions about the condition of the body and the frame...
