  • Turner Dual Conversion - Eclipse MC

    I am in the process of installing an Eclipse MC on the Hawk. Very hard to find, but followed Frank Ambrogi's link to Mitsibushi parts com. I called today and asked it was in stock. "Yes"...may I order one? "May I have your VIN number?"....I am using it in a Studebaker to replace the under floor MC. " I am sorry without the VIN number I/we cannot sell you one as it will not be used as for it's designed application".

    I found one at Autoparts.com, didn't care if I used it as a lane marker on I-80. Price was 50% less than Mitsibushi.

        I have 3 related stories.

        1.) I needed a part for the 2002 GMC Sonoma rear end in my 52 Studebaker. I went to the GM dealer and they asked me for the VIN. I told them I just had the rear axle, not the whole truck. She said she was sorry but she couldn't look up a part without the VIN.

        2.) I wanted to rent a tow dolly from U-Haul to tow my Studebaker to South Bend. They said they couldn't rent me a dolly because a 52 Studebaker was not on their web site, and they didn't know how much it weighs.

        3.) I bought a battery from AutoZone and when he was giving me the warranty card, he asked me what kind of car it was. I told him it was a 52 Studebaker and he said that was not in their database so he couldn't give me a warranty, so I told him it was for my 2006 Dodge Ram. The battery died last month and I took it back to AutoZone. They gave me a new battery, then asked me which of my cars it was for. I told him it was the 2006 Dodge Ram. He seemed perplexed and told me I needed to check the charging system out because it shouldn't have killed 2 batteries in that short of time.

            That's just the way it is. Computers have made it much easier to train parts counter personnel; they work great for giving a number so the clerk can get it off the shelf. Works fine most of the time; the problems comes in these situations when you need car knowledge. As Bill demonstrates, there's always more than one way to skin a cat.

            Leonard- before I bought my dolly I ran into the same situation. I was told by my local U-Haul guy that the program is what spit that out. He said in the future to say I was towing an Escort or the like, and there'd be no problem. I said, but isn't that lying? He said yes, but it's a problem with the U-Haul software, not my usage; it's very common to use that as a work-around. He said otherwise they'd almost never be able to rent to anybody!

            I bought mine 3 years ago for $800 brand new; got well over 10K miles on it, and hauled I don't know how many cars. In another year I'm going to sell it and buy one a little bigger. Being that my last rental cost about $100 plus all that putzing around, it didn't take long to pay for itself

                I had a similiar issue with U Haul when transporting my 37 home. I just gave him the specs (length, width, WB, weight) and he was fine. The sw is supposed to ensure it is being rented out to haul vehicles it can handle. Once I gave him the info, it supposedly updates in their database for anyone in the future.

                    I came up with a method of mounting the reservoir. There was no room on the firewall, so I drilled some holes in the battery hold down bracket, mounted the bracket to the tray and it really looks like it belongs there. Now to come up with a Studebaker type label and remove the Japanese writing from the cap.

                    It is one of my better pieces of "imagineering" (copyright Disney 1961)

There was no room on the firewall, so I drilled some holes in the battery hold down bracket, mounted the bracket to the tray and it really looks like it belongs there. Now to come up with a Studebaker type label and remove the Japanese writing from the cap.

                      It is one of my better pieces of "imagineering" (copyright Disney 1961)
