  • Studebaker tree sign on old proving grounds

Specifically, where is it? A coworker and I were messing around on Google Maps a little bit ago (gotta love working nites when the boss is gone...) We were looking all over for it, and I couldn't find it. It IS still there, right?

Oh, the tree sign is very much still there and still easily readable from 'most any aerial shot. It is quite a bit west of South Bend on Indiana State Road 2, however, so if you are just Google-mapping South Bend, IN, you won't find it.

Rather, Google-Map New Carlisle IN. Then look south and a little east of New Carlisle along an easily-identified 4-lane highway. That is State Road 2. Look along the south side of State Road 2 for The Proving Ground. In addition to the tree sign, you'll be able to easily see the High-Speed Oval and other Proving Ground features. [8D]BP
We've got to quit saying, "How stupid can you be?" Too many people are taking it as a challenge.

        Ayn Rand:
"You can avoid reality, but you cannot avoid the consequences of avoiding reality."

        G. K. Chesterton: This triangle of truisms, of father, mother, and child, cannot be destroyed; it can only destroy those civilizations which disregard it.

I just checked Google earth. Type in Bendix Woods county park and it should go straight ot the club house. The map had a blue marker on it. When you click on the blue marker you will see a few paragraphs about the Proving Ground in a new window.

Thank you very much! Very cool.
I remember seeing in an old TW about someone taking pix of the old projects that were "stored" (dumped) there by Studebaker. I was kinda hoping those could be seen from the satellite pix, but I suppose all that was hauled away years ago.

Is that from the "real" Google Map thing (the one you have to pay for), or the regular one? Maybe I need some glasses or something.

That's from Google Earth, but the same thing can be seen from Google Maps too.
