  • What does a oil bath air cleaner look like?

    Ok. I've been through "Studebaker's Finest" (Great book!) but, he dosen't show it. I've been through the parts book and they give the number, but no drawings... the reason for all this is; I have a oil bath on my 1953 14G-C3, Champion Coupe, and I can't seem to fit a modern day 6 volt, 100 amp, battery into the battery box without hitting the hood when down!? Is it the air cleaner that intrudes on the left side? The existing box has been homebuilt and sits forward and lower...?

    A fellow SDC'er took his time and effort to send me some photos of an original mount (Thank You!) and it seems to mount way too high, and close, to the O.D. relay on the firewall?

    The battery that I have mesures: 12&3/8 long, 6&3/4 wide and 8&3/8 high. This seems to be the standard... now-days... or am I being mis-led? Were Willard's different?

    Also, were there cool lables and stuff, on the air cleaners- anywhere in the engine compartment- that came with Stude's at the time?

    P.S. What is a very good battery box and top hold-down worth? I don't want to rip-off a fellow Stude member...

    The oil bath air filter for a '53 Champion coupe is an upright cylindrical can that sits near the distributor, and has an elbow that reaches across the top of the engine to the carb. It is narrow enough that it does not interfere with the battery box.

    I don't have a six-volt battery here with me, but I think the standard size battery, which you CAN still get, is less than a foot long. You might have got the next size up, as used in trucks.

    Price of a battery box? Anywhere from $1 to $50, depending on who's selling, and who's buying. I could see a regular vendor asking close to the latter figure for one that's cleaned and painted, because of the labor involved in prepping and stocking it. Maybe closer to the lower figure if you get it from a fellow collector to whom it is unwanted surplus. I don't think you'd be out of line to offer your buddy $20 for it.

    Decals and stickers? Absolutely. Go the home page for this Forum, and follow the links to the vendors page. Are you an SDC member? Members get the monthly club magazine, Turning Wheels, and every month sees a number of vendor ads, and things like stickers and decals are usually very much in evidence.             Are you SURE you have a 3 cell 6 Volt Battery? That thing is a MONSTER![:0]

            The 6 Volt battery that many Chevy's, Plymouth's, all Studebaker's used was a Group 1 standard size, 9 in. long, 6 3/4 in. wide, and 7 3/4 in. High the Ford/Mercury/Lincoln Batt. was a Group 2 which is larger, but NOT 12 in.! [:0]

            The prob. I usually have is finding a Group 1 that was not made Amperage wise for a VW, because those are the largest user of that size now-days and they do not require as many Amps/Amp Hours/Cranking Amps as a Studebaker.

            Many Farm Supply stores in rural areas have tractor Batteries with more power in Group 1 size. Also your local Interstate Battery dealer will have them.

            There is absolutely nothing unusual about a Studebaker Battery or a Willard!

                The six volt battery you get should have 550 to 600 Cold Cranking Amps.

                            Steve's working with a C- K, a coupe, not a sedan. Battery is farther back, don't know about air filters on a six in the coupe. But the battery is still a Group 1. You can fit a six volt Optima in the standard battery box diagonally.
