I wish there were a way to pick the brains of the older folks who Truly know Studebakers and publish this information so that the knowledge is not lost.
There are Old Skool ideas and methods that I would never think of to save a lot of cussing.
Also, have many of you noticed that this current generation appears to not want to get their hands dirty on anything that doesn't require the thumbs to operate?

1 - On the home page of the SDC website there is a section called resources that has much saved info from the past.
2- Bob Johnstone has generously provided a site with a numerous saved discussions from both here and the AOAI site. I'd post the link but the site seems to be down.
3 - A Google search will do better at searching this forum's archives which are extensive.
I like Bob A's permeation of the fish anology and it applies here. A lot of the brains have been picked it's just finding the droppings.
One thing that really helps in the search is a topic specific to the query.
My hot button is the same question asked in several separate posts. It makes searching more difficult and it seems in general that the last post started is where the OP will return leaving answers to earlier posts unread.
BTW, I think if we are going to post more sticky's we need a sticky forum, the top of this forum is half sticky's.

And the fishing analogy I like is,
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish and, for the rest of his life he will be spending his money on graphite rods, Orvis reels, Sea Ark jon boats, waders and materials to make his own flies.Brad Johnson,

You have a couple good points there Mike.
I find it very hard when pretending not to know where to look for "Studebaker Parts" on the Studebaker Drivers Club Home Page!
There should be a Direct link to the Parts Vendor List instead of all that "Other Links" stuff.
And then If someone does what I do, and helps by Posting the Link to studebakervendors.com which helps some, it still is not clear which Vendor has what.StudeRich

I can do everything from welding, to minor machine work. I even have a 1922 South Bend Lathe I picked up last year. However, I will continue to pester you folks when I run up against something I can't figure out. Mostly carburetor, AT, and "been there done that" questions.
Oh and by the Way, I own and even read Shop Manuals.Last edited by Mrs K Corbin; 07-24-2019, 03:55 AM.

So many newbies (and some not so new) won't invest in a shop manual or parts catalogs. I use mine all the time and can't imagine being without them. It would be like trying to find an address without a road map. If they're on this site they must have heard of "Google" You'll get a limited and very unhelpful response to the thingamabob that goes on the whatchacallit whereas the page no. ,illus. no. and part number might possibly be more meaningful. Just sayin'

OTOH if not computer literate, I am happy to give a fish.
Young ones in school, when given a homework assignment don't have to race each other to the library anymore to grab the books and particular encyclopedia volume pertaining to the subject. Hell, when we were assigned to do an essay on Ancient Egypt, I remember hiding the 'E' volume of our school library's World Book encyclopedia until I got the information I wanted from it. Today, one can probably find out everything they need to know about Ancient Egypt and more than any school library in seconds with the internet!!!

How do we get two such similar threads (conversations), from the same person posted so close together, on the same topic????
https://forum.studebakerdriversclub....LLY-help-much-!
and... https://forum.studebakerdriversclub....LLY-help-much-!
OK...now I figured it out...every thing you see posted in bold color in this post is an "EDIT"...somehow, Mike has posted this topic in two separate forums.
Not a serious problem in my opinion, but since I had posted in one of the two threads...I was confused when I saw the other one and the symbol (icon) where I had participated did not appear on the "What's New?" page where I mostly park my screen when checking in on the forum.Last edited by jclary; 07-18-2019, 08:56 AM.John Clary

The question goes like this -
Hi, I'm new here and just got my first Studebaker. I'm having trouble with xxxx. Can you please point me in the direction of / let me know where to find / help me with finding xxxx parts.
Answer -
Any Stude vendor.
What kind of useless (non-) answer is this ? If the person knew WHERE...to find these, so called..."Stude vendors", do you think he / she'd be asking their questions here ?
A link or two to a vendor wouldn't be too much to ask of the people answering the questions..??
Really...taking too much of your time to actually help, rather than state the already painfully obvious..!?
Or maybe even better...one of those "sticky" things with the address of the "Studebaker Vendors" page..!
For those who supposedly know...it ain't Rocket Science, to be able to actually lend a helping hand rather than just toss out semi-useless information...

Yes please dont let this mostly civil kind normal fan board devolve in to any thing like a Chevy fan board. Ive had some of the most rude experiences on some of those boards. I enjoy the help here the usual kind responses to my IMO sometimes stupid questions. But we are all are not full time mechanics nor have we been around these cars our whole lives. I bought mine because it was my favorite looking car also my father said I could never own one because the parts were just not attainable bla bla bla.. I showed him LOL.
It would be nice if there was a list of more of the folks like Robert Kyeptain (SP) who has a good amount of parts yet doesnt have a web page or much more than an email for contacting him. I learn more about availability of some parts just by reading the forum.

A bit on the other side of the fence..!
Another "all to common" thing I've found on most ALL forums is people that depend on others to do "their" homework for them, rather than doing their..."own" homework.
As noted above, many questions can be answered but just using Google. This one I don't understand myself, making others, answer their questions, when the same question can be answered by using the Google line, and then...no one has to take the time to answer a question that's been asked...well, you know.
Leave the (in this case), specifically, mostly oddball / problem type Stude questions to the forums.
Questions like, what's the bore / stroke / et-al type questions for Google to answer. It's very quick, immediate response answer, happens, right now, within a tenth of a second..!
I'll shut up...

Someone asks "what is wrong with my car?" We ask for more information about the car or the symptoms and they do not reply.
Or... we give them some tests to make to determine where the problem lies. They refuse to make the tests, but continue to ask "what is wrong with my car?"
Or... they have already decided what is wrong by shotgunning/guessing and they have misdiagnosed the problem and are unwilling to diagnose it properly.
If they do not understand the importance of the tests, or the importance of basic troubleshooting, but continue to want the correct answer and refuse to answer follow-up questions, how can we help without enough information?
Communication is a two way street.
And I'll add that the Subject titles could often use better description. I've seen titles like "What do you think?" Or, "I don't know." It is like the person asking the question has walked into Floyd's barbershop in Mayberry and has all day to 'beat around the bush' getting to the point. And yet characters like that were written into the script to show the absurdity of that type of communication. On TV they got a laugh - but in real life it is anything but funny.
While I agree that the search function is an asset I often find it tedious and have spent hours chasing down rabbit holes. I'll then ask the relevant, pertinent question on a forum and shortly get an answer. When one is halfway through a job, covered in grease and the sun is setting a quick answer is greatly appreciated. Frankly I have searched for posts I know I myself have written and 20-30 minutes later I still struggle to find them. Lastly on the subject; methods, products etc. change over time. Thus a "searched for" answer might not provide the most current solution.'64 Lark Type, powered by '85 Corvette L-98 (carburetor), 700R4, - CASO to the Max.
