  • what transmission is this?

    Can anybody tell me what it came in? It has cooling lines and the underhood dipstick. Thanks in advance.

    I can't say for sure, because I can't see pics from work (yes, on a Saturday,) but I assume that this is a Studebaker automatic. cooler lines are either a HD FOM or a PS, underhood dipstick means either a long-tail, single piece driveshaft model or else someone just swapped the 'stick into an early case. How many detents on the shift lever? PNDLR is a HD FOM, PRND21 is a PS.

        Didn't check the # of detents. [:I] Long tail shaft; cast iron case with aluminum tail shaft. The numbers are AS12-5P.

            Have you tried looking up the stude number on the id plate, where it says "Mfd. for Studebaker Corp. their no. 1563_ _ _." Can't see the last three numbers, the paint is obscuring it in the photo, but you should be able to make it out by feeling it or rubbing the paint off. Look up that 1563_ _ _ number in the parts cataloges.

            Also, see the patent numbers? You should be able to do a google search on those and you'll probably get a hit on at least one of them.

                The AS12-5P and the 1563--- is enough to identify it as a '65-'66 V8 trans.

                        Matt; that one is going to have the 2 cooling line fittings on the right side just above the pan, because it is a HD Trans. but it's throttle press. control is cable operated not lever operated, so it's a bit different than '58-'64 Flight-O's it does still have a second gear start though.

                          Matt; that one is going to have the 2 cooling line fittings on the right side just above the pan, because it is a HD Trans. but it's throttle press. control is cable operated not lever operated, so it's a bit different than '58-'64 Flight-O's it does still have a second gear start though.

                            Yep, that's it! The cable threw us off, but we knew it was HD by looking at the cooling line fittings. And now we know. Thanks fellas.
