  • LED Dash Lights?

Anyone know if there is a source for LED bulbs to replace the old filamnet bulbs in dashboards?

yes, you might try this site: http://superbrightleds.com/led_prods.htm

they indicate 12v - I'm sure someone could rig up 6v, if needed.

I dunno if LEDs will work well in the stock Studebaker gauges as they use indirect lighting and LEDs are very directional. Worth a try though if you already have some around.

I have not had good results with any LEDs I have tried in automotive applications - did not work well as dash lights in the Porsche (although a purpose-made LED conversion is in there now and works great) nor did the 1157-replacement LED "bulbs" provide any more light than regular 1034s in my taillights - exactly the opposite. Again, I suspect a purpose-made LED conversion with a whole array of LEDs in a breadboard the approximate size of the taillight would work better.

I bought my 50 Starlight from Dave Carter four years ago. Dave had tried to get more
illumination in the dash numerals by using blue LED's ---with no success. He wrote an article on the experiments. The numerals were so dim they were hardly useful for night driving. I modified 6 volt Krypton flashlight bulbs by silver soldering on a pair of bosses to index with the former #55 bulb sockets. Fixed it -glows like the devil now.

My "former" 53 Champion 2 door sedan, was also a project of
David Carter and David had put the blue LED's in "Charlene",
as well, and they were OK!

Check out your sources to see if they can be dimmed.
Most can't, and are either on or off.
