  • Is this really a Stude item?

This is a cool oil can:

Seller says it's a Stude item, but I didn't see any indication that it is...

I'm pretty sure it is genuine, from the '20s or '30s. An ASC guy could identify it.

To me, it looks like a 1940s-1950s item and not a Studebaker item. If you are interested, write to the lister/seller and ask what makes him state Studebaker and ask for a picture of the back of the can (hopefully with the company name).

Got this response from the seller:

The back is just as nice as the front, it does have a squeeze dent on front and back. I was told by a older gentleman that Studebaker used Service Sam as a promo. It does not say Studebaker on it. Thanks for your question.

Did not address my request for a picture of the back.

My interest in it has waned[|)]

This 'Service Sam' can is the same phenonmenon as the locking gas cap that I have owned and seen on eBay a number of times. It has a lazy S design on the cap that most folks associate with Studebaker. It is usually assigned a late 30's origin and is advertised, and sold, as a Studebaker accessory.

It does not have a Studebaker origin, nor has the 'Service Sam' can. As noted by John, "a lazy S does not a Studebaker logo make".
