They are the same block but the R1 is around 240 hp while the regular 289 is around 225hp with a 4bbl and dual exhaust I do believe . I'm sure some of the experts will be chiming in with details or correcting my info . I have a 62 GT hawk with a Tach in it and it seems weird as its an automatic .. The Strata Blue GT Hawks are absolutely gorgeous!!!Love my Lark

Tachs were optional on non-Avanti Powered Cars, and Standard with R Series Avanti Engine.
The first thing to look for is Chrome Valve Covers, Oil Caps, Dipstick Tube, Dipstick and Air Cleaner. The Engine Number STAMPED into the Left Front, Top corner of the Block, will be JT for Jet Thrust, JTS for Jet Thrust Supercharged.
A Standard 289 will be identified by a "P" prefix Serial Number.StudeRich

There seems to be some confusion on what is an Avanti 289. All the Avanti's engines were marked with either the prefix "R" for the R1 non supercharged, or with the prefix "RS" for the supercharged engines. The same Avanti spec'd engines that were used in Larks and Hawks were the ones marked with either "JT" or "JTS" prefixes. As I said the engines specifications were the same for either "class", just that they were marked differently. Hope this helps, Bill.

Also it seems that Gerald may not understand that ALL Factory built Avantis had Avanti "R" or "RS" Engines, unless of course it was one of the 9 that had R3 304.5 Super High Performance Engines from Paxton Products Div. of Studebaker. There were no Standard "P" (President) 289's in Avantis.
But we are a bit off topic talking about Avantis as the subject is '64 GT Hawks.
Most '64 GT Hawks of course had the Standard 289 marked: "PXXXXXX" A JT or JTS Engined Hawk is quite rare, very few built before the line shutdown in Dec. 1963.StudeRich
