  • Is there a survivor class at the nationals this year?

    Curious if there is a survivor class. Probably bringing a nice original Super Hawk up this year.

    I would support a survivor class. It would possibly bring out a few hidden treasures.

      The only time a Survivor Class was tried was at the Atlantic Zone Meet in Gettysburg in 2011. I personally agree that it is a Class that needs ti be considered and added. It will bring many cars out of the woodwork, barns and garages that have no been seen for years.

        Survivor cars are huge now in terms of value compared to restored cars, often selling for more than the restored cars. We need one for sure.

            There was a survivor class 5 years ago at the South Bend National Meet. Vehicles to be presented as such had to register well ahead of time so research could be done by the judges. I believe Jim Pepper was in charge of it back then. As far as I know it has not been done again since that one time.

              I remember talking to Jim about it back then. I know it is a complicated thing to do and do right. I was not sure if anything came of the class or not. It is rather important to the hobby as far as I'm concerned. Too many good survivor cars have been restored in the past. It's nice to have a totally virgin car that can actually be used as a "master" so to speak in order correctly restore the ones that need it. My Hawk has original paint, upholstery, carpet, hoses and hose clamps etc. I replaced brake hoses for safety but kept originals and have them in the trunk. A very unusual car to begin with and one that is worth referring to when restoring another.

                We tried this in 2012 at our Meet in South Bend. It was met with much positive feedback. We have a ways to go, but I still feel it was a good idea.

                  I met with a disappointed participant in the survivor class in SB. He did not have the proper documentation, that satisfied the judges, but claimed to have owned the car since new. Either he had no build sheet, or the build sheet didn't have all the required data. I've been a judge numerous times and from my perspective the car showed was original. We ask that judges defer to the owners with regards to originality in stock classes, but it seems to me that more documentation was being required for the survivors. I think that a better job has to be done to publicize when the service is available is available and what is required for documentation.

                  IMHO a great deal more has to be done to vet our original cars. As our cars have gone from drivers to historical icons, not enough has been done to encourage their owners to maintain the cars as original. My personal experience has been that putting and original car on a show field with restored cars, without the story of the original car being told, does that car a disservice. I would like to see a consistent vetting process at every international, but it doesn't look like it is going to happen. In lieu of proper judging, I think that a special area needs to be set aside for the original cars so that their stories can be better appreciated. This isn't going to do much for the guy that needs that judging form, but speaking from experience, it would better enhance appreciation for the car.-Bill

                    I agree with a Survivor Class. As long as folks don't get too emotionally involved it could be a good thing. Just bring what you have, show it, and be happy with whatever the results are.

                      My '33 Rockne is a true survivor. I had it judged at the 2008 Lancaster Meet, just to have that experience. As there was no "Survivor" class, it got judged right alongside the beautifully restored pre-war cars. I lost points for the condition of the paint, upholstery, chrome and engine compartment; but not a single point for authenticity or originality. That still garnered a Third in Class.
                      I believe the AACA class is called "Preservation", and there is some lesser percentage of the vehicle that can be repaired or replaced and still qualify in the class. Some day I'll have to run it by the AACA judges; just for the experience.

                        I think a 'Daily Driver' class also needs to be considered. Frankly, are there any Studebakers more important than the few left that serve their original intended purpose....to provide dependable, economical everyday transportation in today's real world??

                          I agree. As is, just look for the drivers in the parking lot or, "Display Only" area.
