  • Transmission / Overdrive: 1948 Champion Column Shifter Rebuild

Does anyone have pictures of the mechanism assembled at the base of the steering column near the box. I have it partially assembled for the shift rods but I seem to be missing a few parts. The spring, washers & roll pin, I think. I didn't take it apart and no pictures were taken of the process to put back together. The only picture I have is all greasy and dirty and it's hard to make out the parts. I see there is spring but can't make out the other parts on the shift rod.

There are few things as challenging or as maddening as attempting to assemble a complex mechanical device that someone else tore apart.

There are pictures (mechanical drawings) in the chassis parts book that show how all these things go together. The parts manuals are really as helpful, or more helpful than the shop manual, in my experience.

I found some pictures of mine. It is older but should be very similar to yours. There is a spring held in place by a washer and pin. The spring is what pulls the shift lever towards the dash so anything that fits will probably work. Washer and pin are standard parts.

It has been a while since I tore into mine but as I recall it was not too complicated. The parts book does have a great exploded view of the shift mechanism.
