Yes or No Without making changes in the cars wiring. The original generator put out around 30 amps and the meter movement went + or - 30 or 35 Amps. The 12SI alternator can put out about between 60 or 90 amps depending upon which model. The meter will work fine until more then 35 or so amps is going through the meters internal shunt. I don't know how much additional amperage the meters shunt can take before it is burnt out.
The charging system will put out more then the meters capacity of 35 amps anytime you start the car with a discharged battery. The alternator is going to recharge the battery at a rate grater then 35 amps
Another consideration is that the original wiring was designed for a maximum continuous load of less then 35 amps.

(In addition to the existing connections....) If you take a 12" length of 10 gauge wire and coil it up, then attach the ends to the terminals (-/+) of the ammeter, it will shunt much of the 12SI current around the meter. Your gauge will still show charge / discharge, and the values will be off , but it will not burn out the internals64 GT Hawk (K7)
