  • Steering: Power steering leaks

My '64 Convertible has had a serious oil leak concerning the power steering since I first bought it. It is now apart being painted, and I am taking advantage of the situation by replacing all gaskets, hoses, etc. the worst leak has been found to be in the ram piston. I ordered a seal kit from SIL, but the mechanic says there is play in the shaft, and he doesn't think just replacing the seal will last. SIL doesn't sell the whole ram cylinder. I am fed up. I'm not a mechanic, but I wonder how much trouble it is to just do away with the power steering. It might be good for parking and tight turns, but it feels too "artificial" on the road. Has anyone done away with power steering? Thank you for any help.

I have an NOS 1551362 power steering cylinder assembly available, still in the factory box. If fact I just opened the box and unwrapped the cylinder from its protective waxed paper. First time it has seen light in I don't know how many years!
    PM me if interested.
