  • Did any Studebakers have a Bendix Treadle Vac brake system?

A friend of mine has a 1956 Packard Patrician and is looking for references and help on rebuilding the brake system. I did not know if any of the 1957-58 Packard / Studebakers had this brake system. Hence my post.

    Thanks in advance!

The big Stude trucks that did not have air brakes use a Bendix Treadle Vac.

My friend had a Packard 400 in his shop that needed the treadle vac rebuilt. He sent it to Kanter.

        Craig-
Were they optional? All I ever seen in the parts books and on the big trucks are big Hydrovacs, though Midland units were available on some big 2R trucks. My 4E40 has a 9.5" Bendix Hydrovac.

Now that I look at my vintage can of Bendix Power Cylinder Lubricant, and enlarged the illustrations on the back, the truck version is a bigger version of the car Hydrovac.

Some (most?) GM cars used Treadle Vac in the 1950s. Searching a Packard or Oldsmobile owners forum should locate a rebuilder and/or a dual circuit upgrade.

Most Packard people shy away from these, as finding a good rebuilder is hard to do. There is a valve prone to rust and failure that isn't in the kits. It fails and you have no brakes. I believe there is a conversion and brackets to put a better system in place. Read the Packard-info website, and get pages of information.
