V8 oil pan question

My grandad and I were out looking at his 'stash' of Stude V8's, and there is a 259 with an unusual oil pan. The sump is about twice as big as that of a 'regular' V8. Anybody know what the deal is here? It sure had us scratching our heads. [?]

what year was that engine? ISTR that some earlier engines had a six quart pan, but I don't know that I've ever seen one.

Not sure of the year Nate. It's a 'V' number engine, with 2 nuts on the valve covers.

Did Studebaker build a commercial engine for stationary use? I know my dad had two 1950s Crysler hemi stationary engines on irrigation pumps that had 8-quart pans and also guages that shut the engine off if the temp got too high or the oil pressure too low. Maybe Studebaker did something similar.

I should add, I have a 6-quart pan I got from Dick Dotson several years ago--the sump is deeper, not longer.
