  • Question about R-series Stude engines?

I have been around Studebakers for more than 40 years and thought I read or was told by someone that R series engines held more oil than reg. stude v-8s and thus having larger oil pans and they needed a dent in said pan to clear certin model cars steering arms, etc. If this is so,would that not explain why some pans have a dent? Just asking? Thanks Neil G.

While I was in South Bend for the International I met a guy that said he used to work for Studebaker on the Avanti line. He told me at a point in the line the Avanti was driven or rolled over a bump in the floor and the bump put a dent in the oil pan of every car that was moved over the bump. I though he said the dented oil pans were then replaced. When it was suggested to eliminate the bump and the problem the suggestion fell on deaf ears. Should we add this to the other myths about Studebaker?

It is not a dent, it is a flat spot to clear the bell crank and tie rod nuts on Avanti's that have the thin front mounts.

Alan, you just confused me, the Avanti mounts are no thinner.

Guys, ALL Stude. V-8 Oil Pans have that dent at the front for the tie rods to clear when bounced! Just like Neil said, but not for Avantis or certain ones, it's for all V-8's.

I do not believe it is needed on Hawks, but they all have it anyway, just for simplicity sake. Avantis & Larks need the clearance. It has absolutely nothing to do with R-series engines, and is not in the sump, it is in the very front.

It would seriously effect oil capacity and oil pump pickup clearance if it were in the sump, because you pickup sludge, worn metal particles etc. in the oil pump pickup screen when the pan is too shallow, I would NEVER even think about installing an engine with a dented pan sump.
