  • Supercharged Engine Crank Pulleys.

    Hi all,
I believe there are differences in supercharged engine crank pulleys and spacers etc. Can someone clarify please.

Hi Aussie-- what year and model car are you referring to? I believe the '57-'58's are'nt the same as the '63-'64's... I have a '64 289 Daytona I converted to an R2, and I was able to get a new (reproduction) Harmonic Balancer for it. The one for supercharged Larks and Hawks has a belt groove machined into it, rather than being smooth and flat all the way around. I got it from John Erb, but it can sometimes be difficult to get parts from him in a timely fashion. Perhaps Myer Studebaker in Ohio would be a good source also. They have a lot of supercharger experience. After getting that balancer, you may need a longer crankshaft bolt, the stock pulleys bolt right on, and how many of them you need depends on your car's options, i.e. power steering, and or air conditioning.
Also, you need to purchase the actual supercharger drive pulley, and a spacer to go between it and the other pulleys (same spacer as used between P/S pulley as I recall?)
It's interesting to note the '63's used a slightly larger supercharger drive pulley than the '64's. They reduced the pulley size on the crank and the blower both in '64 to allow for lower hood clearance. A cool hot-rod trick is to use a '63 crank pulley with a '64 blower pulley. Spins the blower faster, makes more boost.
Of course all this is worthless chatter if you're working on a Golden Hawk!
