I'm having problems replying to a PM concerning a power socket for GPS, so I'll reply here. It's better here anyway, so others can have the same information.
My GPS and most GPS and cell phones work fine when plugged into a 6 volt socket on a 6 volt positive ground car. Just make sure the socket is insulated from the car ground, so you can keep the inner terminal positive, and the case negative. Here is a link to a nice insulated socket with a built in mount, such as I bought for my car. Just run the red wire to the car's ground, and tie the black wire into any power source.
