Rechroming

I live in Northern California and have to go far away to rechrome. I just recently received a bid of $1,400 to rechrome a Champ grill over in Sacramento. Does anyone know of a place to do this that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? I have no problem sending the grill out anywhere.

Try Mexico. you need to find someone taking a whole load down there so you can get a better deal.

If the place you took it to is Sherm's in Sacramento, they are not cheap but the best you will find and I mean good, but not cheap.

Best left to professionals, takes a special technique and has a learning curve to finally get it "right". It's Silver Nitrate and Ammonia Hydroxide, applied over black, sort of a reverse mirror silver application. Not exactly non-toxic. If you use a specialist who has the right equipment, and uses the right technique, when clear coated with a tinted clear it will resemble chrome. But, the total savings vs. real chrome isn't much using a pro to do it. Now for damaged, pitted pot metal it might save an irreplaceable part. Despite all the hype, it's not really a do-it-yourself product.

From anything that I've heard the spray on chrome looks more like a real nice base clear sliver. No one seems to be all that impressed with it.

Try Alternative Chrome Creations in Haysville KS. My 33 Studebaker radiator cap was so pitted Paul's Chrome would not even attempt it. I did some research and then sent it off to Alternative Chrome. I could not believe what a great job they did. It absolutely looks like real chrome -- not just close, but perfect. If anyone wants a photo, I'll try to figure out how to post one.

If by "Champ" you really mean a Champ truck, not a Champion car, decent used or even NOS grilles aren't too hard to find. You might even consider substituting a NOS Lark grille (I THINK they interchange) which you can get from SI for $85. Either way, a fraction of the cost of rechroming.

Oh foolish me! I sent out a pair of valve covers and a valley cover to a local guy for the paint on chrome. That was almost 5 months ago, but he assures me he is working on them "not to worry". Sheesh!! Kustommusic

Thanks, everyone. I bought one from SI and it was scratched up. Yes, it's for a Champ truck. I'd like to keep it original. I have been keeping an eye out on Ebay, but hard to find. I'll reach out to the suggestions above.

mike, i have had some spray crome done 3 yrs a go it was great like you said , had it done around here not the guy you were talking about but he went out of business , heard he was in with a nother guy that wanted faster return on his investment so he pulled out , but he wsa great and 1/2 price of reg. cromingi might go with the guy you are talking of in KS, not that far from me.

mike, i have tryed a guy that went out of business cause of the other invester, but e did great with this spray crome, might try the guy are talking about in KS, 1/2 price of reg. crome process .
