  • 1965-66 model test on the proving grounds

In just talking today, it came up as to if the 1966-66 models were ever tested at the Studebaker Proving grounds in South Bend. I thought maybe they were but I would think it would be minimal testing.

    Does anyone know?

My guess is that all or most of the Engineering Dept. Techs at the garage on the Proving grounds, had been laid off by then.
But it still could have been possible if they wanted to send people there.

It may depend on how soon after the South Bend Plant closing, that they sold the Proving grounds to Bendix.

I think Ed Reynolds may remember something about that, that he may have gotten from his Dad, E.T. Reynolds in Engineering.

I'd be interested in knowing the answer. I can't image how depressing it was after the South Bend plant closed down.

I read it was phased out by August, 1964, and then put up for sale.

The '65 model got on the proving ground track ,on page 176 of the book "Studebaker The Complete Story " there is a picture of a Daytona getting on the track.

Of course that would have been done during the summer of 1964.

Thanks, I saw the picture in the book but just didn't click at the time. August 1964 does fit in the timeline before the 1965 models were released. Thanks guys.

If you are referring to Patrick Foster's book, "Studebaker The Complete History" I believe your page reference is incorrect. Page 176 illustrates four styling shots. Page 167 shows a 1965 Cruiser that "may" have been photographed at the proving grounds but such is not indicated.

The thread asked if 65 and 66 models were tested at the proving grounds and they were not. The photo I believe we are both talking about could very well have been shot at the proving grounds since all our 65/66 photography was produced in both countries.

As I indicated in post #5, we didn't do any testing of the 65 or 66 models at the proving grounds.

Then I apparently don't have the book you're referring to. Perhaps you can bring it to the next chapter meeting.
