The 259 engine has a shiny Edelbrock 1405 carburetor on it. Is this too much carb for that engine? Should I try to score a 1403 or even an old AFB?

If after driving it some, the Spark plugs are sooty, Dry and BLACK you may want to consider a 500 CFM Carb. or Jetting it down with the proper Jets, Metering Rods, Springs etc. per the Edelbrock Spec sheets available with New Carbs. and on their Website.
