  • WWII Australian Gas Producer

I recently visited the National War Memorial Museum in our Capital Canberra, walked around a corner and came across this - a 1940 Stude Commander fitted with a charcoal gas producer of the era ( https://www.awm.gov.au/ )

That's interesting that Electrolux built it. I wonder if this is the same as the Electrolux vacuum cleaner company?

It was the Swedish parent, Electrolux AB who made them, a distant relative of the vacuum cleaner outfit.

Gas producers for vehicles were VERY common in Europe during the second world war. http://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2010/...-gas-cars.html

Electrolux made vaccum cleaners in Australia from 1936. However, the advent of the war saw major disruptions, and wilst the Electrolux plants in Oz and NZ produced various items (including modifying old Lee-Enfield .303's into semi-automatics in NZ) during the war, I doubt whether the parent company had anything to do with it - I suspect their plant and equipment would have been appropriated under the control of the OZ govt. during wartime with zero Swedish input (we were just a little bit grumpy with "neutral" Sweden and their continued support of the German military via the sale of all their iron ore to Germany through the course of the war). Greetings from the island of Naxos in Greece.
I wonder if that was Beb Fox's old car. I can't explode the pictures here to chack the grill properly but is it a late 39 Commander?
The Victorian registration number plate would be worth about 10 times more than the car.
