  • Kirk Kerkorian Passes - Sold TIA to Studebaker

Kirk Kerkorian close friend to Sherwood Egbert and owner of Trans International Airlines passed away Monday. He sold TIA to Studebaker and then latter repurchased it from Studebaker. Additionally he was instrumental working with Egbert to build the El Dorado Country Club in California. He was 98 years old.

Ironic that Kirk should have passed just now. In my recent address to SDC members at the Europe SDC Meet in Warwick UK, I acknowledged the sale of TIA to Studebaker and resultant re-purchase by Kirk Kirkorian. Most were not aware of this association. RIP Kirk.

While I think he is better known for his movie studio and casino holdings, he was also an automotive investor as well. Don't forget that he and Lee Iacocca tried to buy Chrysler in the mid '90's.
