first, can the transmission be removed from car w/o pulling motor w/ trans. if so is there any info on specifics. the reason for pulling trans., the steel ball that falls into the detent mech. is stuck in the up position, therefor it freewheeles. if that makes sense. any help appreciated. tks chas.

Yes, both the automatic, and manual transmissions can be removed from under the car. If an automatic, don't forget to drain it and the torque converter first.
