  • Transmission / Overdrive: Hurst Shifter

    Hi people.
We have a Hurst SS shifter fitted to '63 R1 Avanti 4 speed T10. The spring for the reverse lockout has broken. Can some one help with a supplier of parts for this. I have been all over the internet without much joy. I am in Australia.
    Thanks in advance
    Dave..

I had a Hurst shifter that broke the reverse detent spring and I made a custom reverse lockout mechanism. If you measure where the movable part of the shifter is with respect to the shifter frame when the shifter is in the 1-2 slot, you will see that there is about a 1/8" gap. That gap disappears, i.e. the shifter handle moves all the way to the fixed part of the shifter frame, when you engage the R slot. So I made a 1/8" thick "lockout plate" that kept the shifter in the 1-2 slot until it was withdrawn. When the "lockout plate" was withdrawn, reverse could be engaged. Here are some photos of the arrangement and the dimensions of the "lockout plate". Incidentally, the reverse spring on the Hurst shifter is VERY strong and you have to disassemble the whole shifter to replace it.

ID:	1696945Here is a pic of the spring required. I am not sure if your shifter is the same as ours GinettaG12P but I will look at it. Thanks.

It's been about 3 yrs. since I have been snooping around for Hurst stuff, back then I do remember Hurst had a 'rebuilding' section on it's website where the company would refurbish your shifter...have you tried contacting them for parts? just wondering. cheers, Junior
