  • Interesting connection /Al Capone & Studebaker

    This... Just in!

About two months ago, a demolition crew knocked down the old Bergl
Chevrolet dealership building at 54th and Cermak Road in Cicero, IL.

The building next door to Bergl (to the east) was at one time the
Cotton Club, a Prohibition-era speakeasy owned by the Capone brothers,
    Al and Ralph.

When they finished demolition, they found a 'ghost sign' on the Capone
Cotton Club building for 'Studebaker' from 'Cicero Motor Sales.'

    Questions:
    1) Any one have any information on the name of the Studebaker Dealer in Cicero, IL

    2) Did Al Capone drive Studebakers?

When I saw the heading to his tread, I figured it had to go with the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre where Capone's mob shot rival gang members in a garage.

Similarly, when working on my Studebaker in a garage, I've been tempted to shoot it.

Nice. Speaking of "ghost signs", a local businessman is renovating an old brick storefront here in Trochu to make it a bottle depot. Last occupant was Harry's Bakery, and it has been vacant for a few years. He took down the plywood bakery sign, and beneath it, painted on the bricks, was, "Barber Shop and Pool Hall". Camera time!

Interesting... maybe that's why my Dad liked Studees and Mum detested them.

For a second there I thought you were going to say, "When they finished knocking down the wall Giraldo found an empty room."
