  • Random Packard Hawk Questions...

Too much time on my hands I guess...

Was the scoop on the Packard Hawk hood functional?

Does anyone know if a PH hood can be directly swapped over to a 55 C/K?

Is the PH front bumper the same width as any C/K front bumper?

    Thanks, Junior

I believe that the scoop is non functional, but it's the perfect candidate to 'open up' and make functional.....which wouldn't be a bad idea, as PH's tend to run on the hot side.

My '58 Packard is a sedan, but from what I recall looking at a Packard Hawk they have a lot in common.

      The scoop is not functional.
On the sedan/wagon it is there so that the hood clears the radiator cap.
Is that why it's on the Hawks? Seems about right to me.

A direct hood swap might be tricky without some other parts.

The bumper is different. But with the right parts it might work. (see above)

I've been thinking about swapping a '57 Clipper nose to a Studebaker.
For this reason I have a parts car and a nose from another car too.
That would be the easiest way to do a swap like that if you ask me.

I've seen a 1957 Packard wagon with a 57 Studebaker President front clip. Car was on eBay last spring. With sale of the car came the Packard parts to convert it back to all Packard. Car didn't sell if I remember correctly, it was body number 76. Car was very rough.

Junior, The hood scoop was non-functional on Packard Hawks. Besides being cosmetic, the real purpose for the raised scoop was to clear the supercharger, due to the downward slope of the hood. 57-58 Golden Hawks solved this problem by cutting a triangular shaped opening in the metal hood and placing the fiberglass overlay on top to cover the hole. The P.H. hood will fit the 55 C-K at the back and sides of fenders, however it probably is not the same contour as the top edge of the 55 grille, and the lenght from front to back i am not sure about. If you were to use the P.H. nose cone on a Stude, you must cut off the inner fender air deflector part that butts against the radiator support, so you can mount the nose. Lastly, the P.H. front bumper is a little bit wider, as it has to clear the lower ends of the nose cone, which lay over the fender. Also the Bumper mounting brackets are specific to the P.H. bumper.
Hope this answers your questions, Dave

I've had the scoop removed from my hood, and with the hood closed I found that
the fan shroud sits directly behind it.
