  • Went to a junkyard - what is this part in the GT Hawk engine bay?

I went looking for a trunk lid and found (3) K series (none with a "good" trunk, tho! ). One is a GT Hawk, and it had something under the hood that I don't recognize.

It may well be something common, but I haven't run across one before. It's on the right between the valve cover and inner fender.

you mean the big ugly thing...as in Bendix hydrovac, or boost whatever they called it? That'd be for the POWER for the power brakes. cheers, junior

Could very well be - I've never seen a Studebaker brake booster!

Yes, now that I know where to look in my 59-64 Chassis book, I see that you are correct.

I now know what a Stude brake booster looks like. And you're right, it is a big ugly thing!

        Thanks for the schoolin'!

Have a similar booster in my P body 57 wagon.
Is mounted on the fire wall on my car. By design it looks like it could be located anywhere there is
room. With correct brackets and near a vacuum source.

Wondered what model Studebakers the other two 'K's were?

I've got one that needs a rebuild if you need one.

Hydrovacs were used on a variety of vehicles, including many GM cars and trucks, into the late 1950s. Their advantage was that they didn't have to located adjacent to the master cylinder, and could thus be installed on vehicles that had an under-floor master cylinder. Stude stuck with them on the Hawks, even after the Larks were converted to suspended pedals and modern, firewall-mounted boosters, because the company never re-engineered the brake system on the K models.

I had a gentleman at a car show ask me if that part was the supercharger!

EDIT: Just noticed the post, so obviously a C car, not a K!

I'm pretty sure that Ed Reynolds has those new! There is NO sense having one rebuilt, if available new for a few bucks more.

hey, might be worth your time to go back to the yard and get those '53 grill surrounds and grill bars...especially the surrounds if they are not cracked and good enough to be re-chromed. Those parts always seem to be in demand...surprised they're still on the car. cheers, junior
