  • Transmission / Overdrive: Column shifter flight-o-matic

The shifter handle on the column has about 2-3 inches of slop while in gear. A mechanic told me it was inside the column after he checked it under the hood and on the transmission. What part inside the column is needed??? Thanks....

There might be other problems, but there are rubber bushings that might need to be replaced, one is where the shift lever fits into the column and the other is at the base of the column where it connects back to the shift linkage, and almost forgot there is another bushing on the lever on the transmission.

I had a similar problem and changing the rubber shift lever grommet made a big difference.

The most common wear points are the "Bell" shift Collar you see below the steering Wheel.

The actual Shift Tube inside the column.

The end of the shift lever where it connects to the shift tube.

Of course like most things, you have to "get inside" of it to determine the discrepant part.

          What year car?
Get a hold of a chassis parts manual for your car and you can see the parts layout.
