  • 1964 Cruiser Production with R2?

I have seen a lot of questions on how many R powered cars, but none for the 1964 Cruisers. I have a R2 version that origionally came with the HD auto column shift, buckets etc, and haven't seen another.
So how many brothers did this car have? Steve

According to the Feb. '93 Turning Wheels article on '64 Lark-types, there were eight '64 Cruisers built in the factory with R2. Only two of these had the complete Super Performance Package.

Yours is a very rare car indeed!

Coincidentally, the Service Manager at my local Studebaker dealer, Carl E. Filer Co., Greenville, PA, had a new '64 R2 Cruiser with the complete Super package (he had one of the two). I never saw it, but the fellow is still with us and has told me much about it. It was black with red cloth buckets, Powershift, rear seat speaker, and "Certified" speedometer, all from the factory. It was serial number 64V-14402. Would sure love to find it; but he drove it 'til around 1970 and in northwestern PA, the chances of it having survived aren't very high (sigh), even though he said the body was "still pretty good" when he sold it.

Man, that does sound like a sweet ride! I like the light Horizon Green too, although I've heard that's not a good resale color, but who cares in a car so otherwise desirable! At least it's not white like so many Studes of that era (mine included) are!

One has got to wonder why the original owner specified HD Flightomatic in a car that has bucket seats? I could understand if the car had bench or split-bench seats.

Sometimes I think things like that were mistakes by the dealer personnel filling out the order form. I used to see new Chevy Caprices loaded but with blackwall tires, Pontiac Bonnevilles and Chevy Monte Carlos and Camaros with bucket seats and column-shift with no console, etc. (console was a separate option)...those gotta be a "goof"!
