  • 61' Tail Lense Repair?

I noticed that someone else was looking for the elusive tail light lenses for a 1961 lark and got to wondering about the set that came with my car. I do not currently have them on as on of them has a small missing piece near the end. I would love to be able to salvage them, as that is the only problem. However, I am not sure how to go about repairing that one side. The other option is to look for someone, like the other gentalmen, who would be interested in selling me one (it does not need to be in nos shape)

I am welcoming any suggestions short of throwing the lens away

Here are a couple of pics:

I take it you don't HAVE the missing chunk?

No deceptive flags to prove I'm patriotic - no biblical BS to impress - just ME and Studebakers - as it should be.

I'm looking for a pair of '61 Lark Cruiser taillight lenses, since the ones on my car are cracked, one rather badly, but I'm still holding out for a set that are in good shape. Seeing how ONE lens sold for what, 175.00 or something on Ebay, though, it's looking less and less likely that I'm going to be able to afford a pair if one ever becomes available.

Those lenses are made of acrylic plastic, similar to Plexiglass. You can glue the stuff with glacial acetic acid, available from a drugstore, or else special acrylic plastic cement from a plastic supply house.

A little searching at an all-makes junkyard might yield up a Brand X lens with chrome backing, or perhaps another busted '61 lens might be found that could provide a filler piece. Acrylic can be softened by gentle heating in an oven, so you could match the curvature.

I have glued up busted '61 lenses in the past, and the result was at least road-legal, if far from show quality.

                    LOL.... gordr = McGuyver

Say Gord... about glacial acetic acid. Since the glaciers around the globe are disapperaing at an alarming rate, will this eventually drive up prices of the acetic acid that's harvested from them, or does their melting actually free up more of it - thereby making it cheaper to obtain???

Surely YOU must know the answer to this!

BTW - do you hafta keep that stuff in your freezer?
